Sustainability report for an Austrian printing company. So first cool thing is this book comes wrapped in a poster. Then it has this great red flourescent accent color along the spine and on some inside pages. The grid used on the black pages activates the negative space and creates a clear hierarchy. Nice, sleek cover. This design is simple but bold. It is supposed to advertise beach front property in Syndey, Australia, so it focuses getting a quick response from viewers. The images are large and saturated. The text is also large on some pages, and is set on an eye-catching metallic paper. It is not quiet or subtle as this would not attract their target audience. -Trini

Another beautifully designed book for a Swiss rockband named “lovebugs”. The serif and sans-serif typefaces are integrated beautifully. The opposing typefaces are balanced by differences in hierarchy and weight. The serif type is larger and bolder, while the sans-serif is smaller and lighter. -Trini

I think this is a beautiful book design. First, I like the stark exterior that immediately contrasts with the saturated, gold interior flaps. Next, the glossy pages enrich the text and images throughout the book. The grid used to organize the page layouts is complex. It is asymmetrical and the spread seems to have an almost circular composition. Finally, the book has an elegant conclusion, with delicate gold illustrations that juxtapose the last gold page. -Trini

Hyundai competition for a poster themed “New Thinking New Possibilities”. The winner was Happycentro. This is a dynamic composition that transforms text into an object. It’s hard edges and facets are reminiscent of technology, which is appropriate for a car company’s poster. -Trini

Magazine “Glamourista”, design by Rachel Galindo. I like how the color of the typefaces matches the photograph. I also like the dramatic scale shift on one of the inside pages. Mostly I love this because I know that some guy was probably tricked by this billboard. And others probably laughed and went as well. So it was probably a successful ad.
From an academic standpoint… I dunno. Something about a clever use of hierarchy.

I just adore this classically, serifed kind of typeface that one would normally see on tattoos. You can also see that the two typefaces used are different, but similar, which is something I find interesting. This is way better than the actual 2012 Olympics logo if you ask me. They’re is a little bit of hierarchy working in the logo itself. First I read 2012, and then London. I think it’s kinda cute and clever.

This is cute. Making some of the type double as a little winky face is very nice and builds an identity for the brand, even though the largest word on the packaging really only tells you what kind of drink it is.

I think Comedy Central has a nice combination of fonts that they’re using. A serious/corporate looking san serif font combined with a scripty font seems odd for a comedy central, but I think it works because of the things that they write using it. The contrast between the nice font and the word bitches is amusing, for example.

I just found out that the Robbo mural was restored. (It was painted over by Bansky and led to a feud between them.) It was a great example of classic graffiti writing from the 80s.
